Chinese Herbs - teas
Chinese herbal medicine is a major aspect of Chinese medicine, which focuses on restoring the balance of energy, body, and spirit to maintain health rather than treating a particular disease or medical condition.
There are roughly 13,000 medicinals used in China and over 100,000 medicinal recipes recorded in the ancient literature. Plant elements and extracts are by far the most common elements used, but minerals and animal substances are also commonly used, depending on the diagnosis. Most practitioners use only a small subset of herbs and formulas, typically ranging around 300 herbs and several hundred formulas. Western research has confirmed many of the actions of Chinese herbs.
Herbs can be prescribed in many different forms including decoction (making a strong tea), pills, powders, soups, topical applications, and herbal pillows. Patients receiving herbal prescriptions will be given detailed instructions on the proper method of preparation and dosage.
Like acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine has been in continuous use for over 2000 years. There is a long history of clinical data proving the safety of Chinese herbs. Chinese herbs are routinely given, even in delicate situations such as pediatric patients, pregnant patients or patients with compromised immune systems. At Two Tiger Acupuncture, we have extensive training in the safe usage of herbs in all situations.
At Two Tiger Acupuncture, we use only the highest quality of herbs and order organically grown herbs whenever possible. We only purchase herbs from reputable sources who do rigorous testing for substances such as heavy metals. This means that our herbs may cost more than some of our competitors, but we feel that this is necessary to protect the health of our patients and to ensure the safety of our prescriptions.
